He worries. There is little to distract Luffy in a manor like this and so he worries for his friends and with too much time on his hands he's already decided on having a talk about it. )
Two specials please. ( Luffy doesn't know what they are, doesn't check as he watches the door casually, wondering if Nami will show or up if she'll be able to sense the oncoming discussion on the horizon like a navigator would a storm. )
( she does sense something, though whether that's her own defensiveness post-network nightmare speaking is more an issue of probability. ultimately, nami does feel a little abandoned by everyone she knows, through no real fault of their own or by anything they've done, but just because she doesn't feel worth the friendship everyone's given her thus far, when it results in issues like that. inevitably — she just doesn't want to be alone, which is why she shows up, despite her reservations. if you can count on luffy for one thing, it's that he'll be happy to see you.
that's ignoring the fact that, even with their brief conversation of relationship status, she doesn't actually know where the two of them fall post resurrection orgy threesome with zoro. she forgets there's any confusion at all until she sees him, remembers him and zoro, and her cheeks go pink. nami steps up just in time for the barista to pass over two frozen drinks topped with whipped cream, giving him a nod of greeting. )
Hey. ( she yoinks a drink for herself, before gesturing over to a table. she pats a canvas tote over her shoulder. ) Wanna sit? I brought some stuff to work on.
( lazy mapping attempts now that she's mostly given up on making sense of this place. she still tries, mostly as busy work, to keep herself distracted. )
( The drinks placed down look fantastic and Luffy's grin only widens as he spots Nami. As suspected he's always happy to see Nami and something in the way his expression brightens pings the barista enough that a plate of cookies is also provided. On the house.
If there's any confusion of Luffy's side there's not a hint of it as the young captain sits next to his navigator, shoulder to shoulder as he invades personal space without a second thought, not one to let intimacies get in the way of friendships it seems. The bag gets an intrigued look; if anyone can map this place it's Nami and Luffy makes a note to go over them with the redhead once the storm has passed over them. )
Yeah? I hope it's maps. ( Luffy winks before staring at his drink, wondering how he should approach the subject that weighs on his mind. With Sanji it had been easy; just send a message and ask outright. Nami, on the other hand, needs a different kind of tactic, something Luffy has been slow to learn since arriving and he silently reaches out to hold her hand in his own. ) You doing okay?
( she confirms a little wryly, too used to luffy's general lack of spacial awareness at this point to mind being pressed up against him. it would've been way weirder if he sat across from her. anyway. she's in the process of pulling some supplies out when luffy catches her hand and her attention, turning back to him with a briefly surprised look.
she knew this was a set up. )
I'm okay, Luffy. ( squeezing his hand. ) Don't worry so much. You'll get wrinkles.
( Luffy peers at the supplies briefly before turning back to Nami, smile still small and present at the talk of wrinkles. )
Who says I don't have any and I'm not just holding them all back with plastic clips? ( Still, Luffy takes note of the answer, turning it over in his mind as he wonders. I'm okay, but the feeling of more underneath it lingers. Luffy has been watching some of the network conversations; Sanji seemed more prone to threats, Nami more prone to irritation. At some point something will give and Luffy would rather his friends survived such a fallout.
Luffy reaches up to remove his hat, placing it to one side as he turns to fully face Nami, expression earnest as anything. )
I'm gonna call you out on that, I can read you know. I don't think anyone is okay and you're all so busy hiding it for some reason. ( Luffy falls quiet, giving Nami's hand a gentle squeeze in return. ) You can talk to me Nami, I mean it.
( she offers an unserious eyeroll, though it seems more directed at herself than him when she looks away, the corner of her mouth pulling in an unhappy smile. )
There's not a lot to talk about. Sanji doesn't take me seriously, and I can't make him act how I want him to, so we broke up. It's not going to interfere with the crew. I'm over it. ( a shrug, that clearly details the heart of the issue. ) He'll be happier without me weighing him down, making him miserable. That's it.
( If Luffy hadn't spoken with Sanji and Alina, he might have bought Nami's explanation or taken it at face value. But as she speaks he watches careful, catching the unhappy smile and feeling his heart hurt at the sight of it. Whatever it all is, even he knows there won't be a quick fix to it and Luffy lifts Nami's hand a little as he brushes the pad of a thumb softly over her knuckles. )
Why doesn't he take you seriously? ( It's such a strange comment to hear when Luffy has seen Sanji lamenting over Nami as if his life just ended. Some could argue Sanji takes Nami too seriously. )
( there’s a slightly pitting smile, as if luffy is precious for how much he doesn’t understand. not that nami has ever been particularly forthcoming about her feelings, but she’s fairly sure everyone, even sanji, understands when she’s upset. she’s about as subtle as a house on fire. )
He knows how much it upsets me, when he sleeps around. I shouldn’t have to beg someone I’m in a relationship with to care about my feelings, but I have, and all I got was pushed and pushed. ( she presses a palm against her forehead, shutting her eyes tightly. ) So? I gave a chance, I gave him a million chances. He can’t spare the tiniest bit of empathy for how he treats me — he doesn’t think, not ever, about how badly he hurts me. He doesn’t think I’m serious when I say we’re over, he thinks I’ll always be around because I have been, after every shitty thing he’s done.
I’m allowed to be done, and he’s allowed to get what he wanted the whole time, and be happier without me. There is it. I’m not mad, I’m — (she shakes her head. heartbroken. )
( He doesn't mind that small smile from Nami, knowing full well what others thought about him occasionally. A lot would think him totally innocent and in some aspects they'd be right and in others they'd be shocked to learn otherwise.
And the more Nami speaks the more Luffy feels his heart sink. Alina had said it hadn't even gone so far, and what little did had been a result of the games the manor liked to play. Sanji had alluded to it being a little more than that, and Nami mentions the million chances given.
There's no way to wave a magic wand to get Nami and Sanji back together again, but at the very least Luffy can try and ease the heartbreak that's evident and he releases the redhead's hand to wrap an arm around her shoulders instead for a hug.)
You're sad about it. And that's okay, I would be too. Your trust is broken and even I know that's hard to fix.
( she leans into him, feeling a little dumb. she doesn’t need a hug — she’s over it, all her hurt feelings packaged away in sealed boxes, ready to never be looked at again. however, luffy gives the best hugs, hugs good enough to have her squashing her eyes together, fending off tears. nami is aware enough to know she and sanji are That couple, the one that breaks up one month and is back together the next, because sanji acts constantly like nothing even affects him, and nami doesn’t know how to empty her heart of him. the crew is probably sick of them — she knows zoro is. must be. luffy too.
besides, nami doesn’t have any right to act like the hurt party. sure, she got cheated on, but she dumped him. if he didn’t seem so happy about it, unbothered and unchanged, nami would worry about him taking it badly. goes to show what their relationship meant, she guesses. )
Anyway. Like I said — fine. ( she pulls back, a hand lingering on luffy’s shoulder, trailing down until she can interlace their fingers. sniffing, nami looks back up to him. ) Has Shanks talked to you?
( her tone is very — something. completely, purposely unfeeling. )
Not fine. But if you ever feel it's too much, just tell me. ( The hug is something at least, a small step in some unspoken direction that even Luffy isn't certain of. It's better than a smack and he takes his time, quietly enjoying the warmth of it all before eventually Nami shifts back. He doesn't say anything on the sniffling, simply gives Nami's fingers another squeeze as he lets them twine with his own.
He knows whatever this is, is nowhere near over. But if he can at least be there for them both as they figure it out, Luffy supposes that's the most he can do for now. He just wishes he could read Nami's mind, reach in there and pluck out the part that eats at her the most. His smile tightens a fraction at the mention of Shanks before the expression quickly passes and Luffy gives a small shake of the head. )
We haven't talked much since the games happened, and then Koby's haki went wrong and just.... ( A shrug. Luffy has decided to simply not think on it too hard, to focus on anything and everything except for what had happened. He doesn't understand it and Luffy has found it's all too easy to begin picking it apart until the hurt feeling threatens to firmly take hold. ) I don't really know what to say to him these days.
text > action
not a set up. just me and some coffee.
no sanji or zoro.
( It's not a set up per say, but Luffy doesn't have the most honest intentions as he finds some seating to lounge on as he waits for Nami to show at the café drip. Luffy often reads what his friends put on the network when he can, and these days he can almost feel the stress dripping from the words as he watches Nami, and to some degree Sanji, fighting with others.
He worries. There is little to distract Luffy in a manor like this and so he worries for his friends and with too much time on his hands he's already decided on having a talk about it. )
